This course is a beginner-friendly introduction to the Mischtechnik — a layered oil painting method passed down through Fantastic Realism masters.
Inspired by Ernst Fuchs, Michael Fuchs, Phil Rubinov-Jacobson, and Brigid Marlin, this technique builds luminous images through underpainting and transparent glazes.
You develop values in a careful underpainting first, then slowly breathe color into life with thin, glowing layers of paint.
Sculpt with light. Then layer color on top — thinly, patiently, joyfully.

Part 1: Foundation & Materials
Part 1 of the workshop lays the essential groundwork for your luminous creations. We'll delve deep into the core elements of the Mischtechnik process, ensuring you have a solid understanding of both the tools and the foundational stages.
- Understanding your materials (brushes, pigments, oils, mal-stick)
- Preparing your workspace
- Applying the imprimatura (reddish-brown base coat)
- Mastering the underpainting with optical greys
Sculpt with light using cool, neutral greys - this is where the magic begins.
Part 2: Glazing & Luminosity
Part 2 is where the magic truly unfolds, as we transition from the foundational underpainting to building rich, luminous color through transparent glazes. This section of the workshop guides you through the subtle art of light manipulation and color depth.
- The imprimatura foundation
- Cool underpainting with titanium white
- First glaze with Indian Yellow (where the transformation happens)
- Refining with blues, reds, and deeper tones

Amanda Sage is an artist driven to contribute to the development of regenerative culture by using painting as a tool for transformation within the individual and collective.
Besides lecturing and teaching transformational painting workshops, her work has been exhibited in galleries, art fairs, museums and festivals worldwide.
Passionate about artistic social experiments, her endeavors are focused towards building, facilitating and participating in platforms designed to experiment and explore creative solutionary activism within community.
